Whether for Halloween or just daily play, kids love to dress up like their favorite heroes — and more and more often these days, the traditional cape-clad superheroes are losing popularity to real-life heroes like policemen, firefighters, and soldiers. Dressing up is an important part of play, and it helps kids exercise their imaginations. If you want to encourage your children’s interest in real-life heroic careers, introduce them to some of the most-picked kids costumes listed below.

  • Police Officer. Police costumes have always been one of the most popular choices for Halloween costumes, as well as for kids who love to play cops and robbers. Choose from the well-known blue uniform with a matching cap, a black version, or even a SWAT team uniform complete with ball cap.
  • Firefighter. Firefighters are true heroes. They go into flames to rescue the people inside, and that takes both strength and bravery. Plus, they have distinctive brightly-colored uniforms and matching hats. For extra cute, have your child carry a plush dalmatian toy.
  • Soldier. Camouflage isn’t the only way to dress as a soldier these days. Now your child can choose to be a U.S. Army soldier complete with helmet, an Air Force pilot, a Navy officer, a sailor, and more.
  • Astronaut. Being an astronaut is one of the top careers kids say they want when they grow up, and that makes astronaut costumes very popular. Choose from the distinctive bright orange jumpsuit or the more familiar white outfit with the matching astronaut helmet.
